You might win the lottery, find YouTube fame, have a good idea that makes your fortune or be in the right place at the right time. Most of us however will need to seek our fortune through employment and for that will need the right combination of skills and knowledge, experience and attributes.
I liken what is needed to a three legged stool.
The seat represents your career and is supported by three legs. One represents education, a second experience and the third your innate employability – your personal qualities and attributes. As you develop the legs become sturdier – you become more confident; they grow taller – you can sit at a higher table. Beware one leg growing disproportionately ahead of the others as you may find yourself sliding off.
Yet what is education; how is it different from experience? What does it mean from a PR perspective? If you are starting an internship why have you been told to keep a learning log? And what are employability skills, are they ephemeral or static, can they be developed.
These are core topics on which I will post in the coming months.
In addition there will be occasional, periodic, posts on Communications, Public Relations and sundry related matters such as Marketing, Management and social media issues.
